'Mutti und ihr buben, März 1944'

Updated: Apr 17, 2022

This is a special Mothers Day dedicated not only to my own "Mutti" for her love and support in what I do with the collection but to all mothers, past as seen here and present in celebration and appreciation for the love and what they have all done for us. This post will recognise the hardship of families and loved ones when away and how many never saw their mothers again. This post is ultimately dedicated to them.

This photograph shows a "Mutti" (Mother) and her two sons seen together for a informal family photograph. The Mother see in the middle can be seen with her "Buben" (Boys) who can be seen with clear similarities to show they are brothers. The two brothers are both Soldaten of the Heer (Army), One and Officer and the other a NCO seen on the left is a Hauptmann (Officer) and on the right can be seen an Obergefreiter (NCO). The Hauptmann is assumed to be the eldest of the brothers as the mother looks to him. To the right is seen the Obergefreier.

The photograph is mounted and developed with a bespoke border writing underneath the photograph that reads:

' März 1944

Mutti ist stolz auf ihre

tuchtigen buben '

This translates to:

' March 1944

Mum is proud of her busy boys '

This accompanies the image of the family nicely for the celebration of Mothers Day. A time still celebrated in modern day to appreciate the love and support of mothers. This time would be especially difficult during the war for all factions involved, but seen here for the German forces, the 'Mutti' seen here would find in equally as difficult to her Buben when away from home fighting. This photograph would act as a special reminder of the love the two brothers share for their family and their mother at this time. The mother would not only miss but be worried about her two boys fighting away. Many mothers lost their and would go on to loose their family members to the war. This photograph showing the date of 1944, only one more left of the war, of course they were not to know that then but hoping for the mothers and family sake they survived the war. They survived that long the Obergefeiter was wounded in combat as he can be seen with the Verwundetenabzeichen (Wound badge) seen in wear.

The names of the family or the brothers is unknown but they can be seen smartly wearing their Heer tunics. The Hauptmann (Captain), this can be identified by the shoulderboards seen on his M36 Officers tunic seen with cuff finishing's. The Hauptmann is decorated with a few awards, these consisting of a EK2 ribbon through his button hole, the Iron Cross First Class (EK1) Seen worn in the middle pleat of his tunic and a West Wall feldspange award. His brother to the right is seen wearing an M40 tunic with a black wound badge, thus showing he has previously been injured in combat or as a result of enemy attack. He can also be seen with double chevron rank on his sleeve to denote the rank of Obergefreiter.

This photograph is a crisp late war reminder of family and the importance of it for a mother on Mothersday. It is hoped that the brothers survived the war and as is detailed in the few words detailed below the photo the 'Mutti' is proud of her busy boys. The mother showing her pride in her two sons fighting for their country and both having awards earned in the field and for their service. This could be reflected on by the mother and the brothers when away from home to serve as morale and a keepsake for their mother and family at home.
